How we lay a patio
The gallery shows the range: rainbow and buff Indian sandstone bordered by brick walls and bi-fold thresholds, wood-effect and large-format porcelain, riven paving and brindle block paving laid in a herringbone side path. Each one stands or falls on the base, so the ground is dug out, built up and compacted before a slab is laid.
Sandstone brings natural colour variation that suits brick houses; porcelain gives a crisp, uniform finish that washes clean; block paving handles drives and paths where cars and bins do the hard work. Steven will show you the options against your house before you choose.
- Indian and rainbow sandstone patios and paths

- Block paving for driveways, paths and side returns

Customer review
How a patio job runs
Laying a patio well is as much about how the job is run as the stone itself. Imogen had her garden terrace laid by Steven and wrote that he was fantastic from start to finish, helpful through the planning, with keen attention to detail, and came back in his own time to do some finishing touches. Kathryn, who had a patio laid, simply said it looks great.
Whether it is a small back patio, a side-return path or a driveway, the aim is the same: a level, well-drained surface that still looks right years later.

Steven was fantastic from start to finish. He was extremely helpful throughout the planning stages and did an excellent job of laying my garden terrace, frequently checking in with me to make sure I was happy. He had keen attention to detail and came back in his own time to do some finishing touches, and was generally a pleasure to have around.

Common questions
Sandstone or porcelain for a patio?
Sandstone is warm and varies naturally from slab to slab, which suits older brick houses. Porcelain is dense, uniform and very easy to keep clean. Both are laid on the same properly prepared base. Steven will show you each against your house and garden before you decide.
Do you lay block paving driveways and paths?
Yes. The gallery includes brindle block paving laid in a herringbone side path, and block paving suits driveways, paths and front gardens where a hard-wearing surface is needed.
Why does the base matter so much?
Because a patio or drive is only as good as what is underneath it. A properly dug out and compacted base is what stops paving sinking, rocking or pooling water later. It is the part you cannot see and the part that lasts.
